Single Review: King No-One - "Bad Porno"

indie rock king no-one single review

Full of glamour and drenched in neon lights, the indie/alt outlet King No-One dropped their latest single “Bad Porno” on 3/12 and it’s as grand as they are. The Yorkshire three-piece, Zach Lount, James Basile, and Joe Martin have crafted a unique sound that’s infused with experimental vibes, synths and hammering riffs to forge a style that stands out.

“Bad Porno” is a nod to noughties pop, the tracks that ruled the radio waves, filled with infectious beats with lyrics that were guaranteed to get stuck in your head. Combine that with a heavy metal punch and you have this track. This song touches on the toxicity, misplaced grandeur, and pretentiousness around sex culture.

The soundscape was heavily influenced by Joe’s obsession with hip hop and the audacious noughties beats, which are evident, especially during the chorus. That, coupled with heavy metal gave them the perfect backdrop to play around with. Zach initially wrote the song using a method similar to “method acting”, developing a whole new persona in his head in order to utilize any affiliated emotions and experiences to heighten his ability to create a narrative.

With boasts of the song being “raunchy, audacious, and unshameful” on the band’s twitter, the track definitely goes there with some of its lines. “I’ll be the villain if you’re into that, so crazy / Bend it back like an acrobat, I’m lazy / Messy kiss and I can’t react but I’m not going home.” While it’s not the raunchiest thing I’ve ever heard, the lyrics are still fun and catchy, with its ability to have you singing its hook long over the song is done.

Overall, it’s an addictive track, one that will get you on your feet and singing every line. King No-One can only go up from here, so be sure to keep an eye out for these guys – you don’t want to miss anything.
